How to Choose a Shower Head

A standard shower head is often shaped like a ball and is usually adjustable, but it is not the only option available. If you are building a new bathroom or redesigning an existing bath, consider the following options when selecting a shower head:

  • Rain showers – Rain shower heads are installed above you, causing water to softly fall on your head. This option is ideal for those who like the idea of showering in a storm, but it's typically not the best for someone that prefers a lot of water pressure.

  • Sliding bar shower heads – A sliding bar shower head is installed on a panel and can be moved up or down. Households that have many people of varying heights may really like a sliding bar shower head, however they are not the easiest to install.

  • Handheld shower heads – Handheld shower heads have the main shower head on a flexible hose clipped to the wall, which enables users to more specifically control where the water is directed when showering.

  • Aerating shower heads – Aerating models mix air in with water, which means less water is used. Aerating shower heads create less humidity and use less water than standard shower heads, which is ideal in humid areas or locations without much water. However, the aeration does cool the water, making an aerating shower head not an ideal option for those that like very hot showers. Aerating showerheads can also be more expensive than other models, but they can help pay for themselves in places where you pay for water.
