Commercial Backflow Testing

When a backflow testing notice arrives, Roto-Rooter can help you arrange service for your commercial property. Have the notice, previous report and assembly location ready when you call.

A backflow test checks the function of an installed, testable assembly using the procedure appropriate to that device. It documents performance at the time of testing. The required interval, tester qualifications and reporting process depend on your water supplier or responsible authority.

With 24/7 emergency & same-day services - Roto-Rooter is there when your business needs it.

What Happens During a Backflow Test?

  1. INITIAL ASSESSMENT - Certified backflow testers will perform an on-site inspection to assess the location, type of backflow preventer installed, and perform a visual inspection of the assembly to ensure your property is up to code.
  2. TESTING - Our commercial backflow technicians will coordinate a time to shut down the system to perform a series of tests to ensure your preventer(s) are functioning properly.
  3. REPORT & RECOMMENDATION - The commercial backflow technician will provide a detailed report of the test results that will be submitted to your local municipal water authority.

If an assembly fails, discuss the findings and the next step before assuming the whole unit needs replacement.

Does Your Property Need Recurring Testing?

Your water provider or responsible authority determines which assemblies need testing, the schedule and the reporting requirements. The assembly manufacturer also provides maintenance and testing instructions. Share any notice you have received when arranging the appointment so the work can address the request.

Most backflow preventer assemblies should be tested at least once a year by a certified backflow tester, although local water authorities may require more frequent testing depending on the type of assembly and the degree of hazard.

Regular testing is essential because backflow preventers contain mechanical components that can wear, deteriorate, or fail over time.

Connections That May Need Backflow Protection

Irrigation, commercial kitchen equipment, boilers, cooling systems and medical or laboratory equipment can create connections that need backflow protection. The appropriate equipment depends on the hazard and pressure conditions. Some preventers are testable assemblies; other devices require a different approach to inspection and maintenance. Confirm what is installed at your property and which service it needs.

What to Have Ready Before Your Testing Appointment

A faster appointment usually comes down to three things: access to the assembly site, the ability to temporarily shut down the business’ water supply, and paperwork from the municipal authority. Ensure someone is on-site and available to assist with these needs at time of service.

What If My Backflow Preventer Fails Testing?

A failed result needs repair or replacement before it can be compliant again. Roto-Rooter can diagnose the failure on-site and recommend the right next steps, whether that is a repair or replacement, followed by the appropriate test. Ask the service team to explain the result and any action your water provider requires.
