How to prevent frozen pipes and what to do if they freeze?
Wrap water supply pipes with foam pipe insulation sleeves. Use heat tape on the most vulnerable pipes. Disconnect outside water hoses then cover outdoor faucets with foam insulation kits to prevent them from freezing. Open cabinet doors beneath sinks to so warm air will circulate around pipes. Allow water to trickle from faucets when temperatures drop below freezing. Keep furnace set no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit. If your pipes have already frozen, use a hair dryer to thaw the pipe. Point a space heater at the pipe or the wall containing the frozen pipe. Never use an open flame to heat a pipe! If necessary, call a plumber to thaw pipes. If a frozen pipe has burst, turn off the main water supply valve in the house and open faucets to relieve pressure and minimize damage.
