Cut the power at the receptacle or the breaker, lift the lid, clear any debris off the intake screen and confirm the float can swing its full travel without catching the pit wall, the discharge pipe or its own cord. A healthy unit starts promptly, settles into a steady note without surging, drops the water level without straining, then shuts off cleanly and stays off. A single thunk from the check valve as it closes is normal. What is not normal is a hum with no movement, a motor that runs on after the pit is empty, or the sound of water running back down into the pit after shutoff, which is a check valve failing to seat and means the pump repeats work it has already done.

Cycling tells you whether the equipment and the pit are matched to the area they serve. - High-water alarm on anything that protects a doorway: it converts a silent failure into a phone call.
