Roto-Rooter of Cincinnati arrived on November 12 to make green improvements at the Burger family home. This busy house is home to two adults and four kids, and they've been looking for ways to use less water and save on utility bills. The plumber got started in the master bathroom. The home's 8-year-old, 1.6 gallon toilets, while not the latest models, are still considered quite modern. The plumber advised that it was not necessary to replace the toilet since it's actually more cost efficient to update the parts inside the tank. For a fraction of the cost of having a plumber install a new, high efficiency dual flush toilet, Roto-Rooter converted this toilet into a water-sipping dual flush model that is just as efficient as any new toilet currently available. Then the plumber did the same thing to the toilet in the kids' bathroom down the hall, and the one in the powder room downstairs, which probably gets the most use of all. The retrofits to all 3 toilets should help his family of 6 save over 22,000 gallons of water per year. Next, the plumber turns his attention to the shower in the master bathroom. He swapped out the old shower head with an efficient, next-generation low-flow head. It'll save about a gallon of water per minute compared to their old shower head. And these new models are so improved that the family won't have to sacrifice comfort or shower quality. By switching both shower heads, the family will save about 28,000 gallons of water per year. Bathroom sinks can use a lot of water, especially if left running while shaving or brushing teeth. So Roto-Rooter replaced the aerorators on each sink with new ones that limit water flow to just a half a gallon per minute. That's a savings of more than 2 gallons every minute. The kitchen is another area that needed improvement. The Burgers decided to have Roto-Rooter replace their well-worn, old sink with a new one, before installing their attractive and more efficient kitchen faucet. All of these changes should save the Burgers as much as 60,000 gallons of water per year. That's enough water to fill the average in-ground swimming pool five times.
