3 Eco Building Products to Conserve Water and Save Money

Since you're living in the 21st century, you've probably heard the term "sustainability." But what exactly does it mean? According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), sustainability "creates and maintains the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony." Water is something that is of great concern to those focused on sustainability. That's because water will eventually become scarcer (and also more expensive to get!), so we need to protect what we have and be as efficient as possible with our current supply.

Whether you're looking to create a more resource-efficient home or business, here are three eco building products that will not only help you conserve water, but possibly save money on your monthly utility bill as well:

  • Low-flow toilets, faucets, and showerheads. According to the American Water Works Association, non-energy-efficient bathroom fixtures consume 41 gallons of water per person per day on average. However, using low-flow options like 1.28-gallon per flush toilets reduces consumption by 36% per day, a savings of up to 12,500 gallons of water per year per household. Imagine the net savings if every household and business in America installed these low-flow alternatives.

  • ENERGY STAR washing machines. Your washing machine is typically where you consume the second largest amount of water in your home. In addition to using up to four times less energy than machines manufactured before 1999, ENERGY STAR machines have the possibility of using less water. Simply look for washers with a low water factor. These eco building products will conserve more water and hopefully save money every month.

  • Rotating low-flow spray heads. If you've got a yard or outdoor landscaping that needs watering, you'll want to look at these alternative sprayers for your irrigation system. In addition, when designing a landscape, try for less turf, plants that require less water for survival, and a system run by a WaterSense-labeled controller. According to the EPA, WaterSense products have been independently certified to help you save water, energy, and thus, money.

Do the environmentally friendly thing and consider each of these eco building products for your home or business. Make a difference in your local ecosystem—and save money in the process!
