A flood from a washing machine could cost you thousands of dollars, especially if the laundry room is not located in the basement. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to prevent a flood from occurring. Following are six plumbing chores that can help prevent major problems.
Perhaps one of the best investments you can make is a flood sensor. You can buy this device in the plumbing section of a hardware store. The valve attaches to the water hookups of your washing machine and puts a sensor on the floor. When the sensor detects any water on the floor, it triggers the valve to shut off the water. The flood sensors are easy to install yourself and do not require the services of a plumber.
Over time, the rubber hoses that come with the washer will deteriorate. Check them periodically to make sure there are no cracks, splits, or other signs of wear and tear. If you notice any problem areas replace them immediately. Otherwise, replace your rubber hoses about every five years.
It is better to replace your rubber hoses with stainless steel hoses. These hoses are burst-resistant and much more durable than the rubber hoses. You can find them in the plumbing section of a hardware store.
Lint and soap scum will accumulate in your pipes causing them to become clogged. You can prevent much of the lint from going down the drain by using strainers over all the drains. You can even purchase strainers that are made specifically for washing machine hoses.
Soap and other products tend to build up on the walls of the pipes. Pour very hot water down the drains about once a week to help dissolve the soap scum. Once a month use a cleaning agent like Roto-Rooter's Pipe Shield®. Not only will it help dissolve the grime, but it coats the interior of the pipes and prevents grime from building up.
If you have slow draining pipes you should have them professionally cleaned. Otherwise, it is just a matter of time before slow draining water becomes standing water. Our plumbers can remove tree roots or other clogs that are trapping debris. You can also have them conduct a sewer line inspection with a video camera if the problems persist. A video inspection will tell you the exact nature of any problems in your pipes and give you the information necessary to correct the problems.
