How to Clean Your Washing Machine

Washing machineYour washing machine has a tough job. Think of everything that gets onto your clothes throughout the day - food, sweat, sand from Fort Lauderdale Beach and more take their toll on your wardrobe. But when you take them out of your washing machine, they're good as new - as long as your washing machine is clean.

Cleaning your washing machine once a month might seem counterintuitive, but it's a necessary chore that anyone who enjoys clean clothes would benefit from.

Before your begin cleaning your washing machine, you'll need to gather the right materials:

  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Bleach
  • Toothbrush

It's important to note that the vinegar and bleach should never mix with each other. They'll be used at different points in the cleaning process here.

  1. Fill your washing machine with hot water - use the largest load setting and the longest wash cycle.
  2. Add a quart of vinegar to the water and a cup of baking soda.
  3. Close the lid for about a minute to allow the ingredients to mix.
  4. Open the lid and let sit for about an hour, then close it to let the cycle complete. In the meantime, you can use the toothbrush to scrub off any soap scum or grime that has built up around the edges of the lid as well as soap or bleach dispensers.
  5. Run the cycle one more time with another quart of vinegar to wash away any grit that the first cycle shook loose.
