Advice on Humming Garbage Disposals | Roto-Rooter Blog

The Tacoma plumbers of Roto-Rooter frequently deal with Garbage disposals. In general, they may be the most misused appliance in any home, because few people are aware that they are designed to only deal with light food residue. Many garbage disposal issues can be connected to larger quantities of food and debris attempting to be sent down the drain.  If your garbage disposal is not working and seems to be making a humming noise, our plumbers have a solution for this common problem.

  1. Press the red reset button located at the bottom of the disposal.
  2. If reset button does not work, turn off the power and examine the drain with a flashlight. Look for foreign objects such as bread ties, coins, etc. If an object is the cause, remove it with pliers or a grasping tool. (For obvious reasons, do not stick your hand down the drain)
  3. Still humming, look for a hex key jam clearing tool. Usually, these are located under the sink or are taped to the disposer.
  4. Locate a slot in which the key fits, turn it back and forth and your clog should be cleared.
