Remedying Hot Water Heat Problems

Virginia Beach hot water heater problems are similar to those all over the country. Hot water heaters need to be serviced and maintained in order to have a maximum life. A few different problems can plague water heaters over their lifetime. Here are a few tips to help you maintain your heater to get the longest life.

Flushing Your Water Heater

Because of sediment and hard water build-up that can collect in a water heater tank, it is necessary to flush the tank every few years. Not every heater tank is the same because every tank is used differently. If you have hard water, you should flush yours more often.

The process is simple. Near the base of your tank, you will notice a valve that looks like the hose valve to water your lawn. Hook a hose to that valve. Turn off the water supply to your tank. If you have an electric heater, turn off the power to the unit. Open the valve and allow the water to drain out. It may be helpful to turn on a hot water tap in a faucet nearby. Be sure to aim the drain hose into an area that can accept hot water (like a drain or large basin) so there is no property damage or personal injury.

When the water is drained, turn on the water supply and allow any remaining materials to be flushed out. Close the valve and fill the tank. Turn on the power supply. Allow the water in the tank to heat and then test the water in a nearby faucet.

Changing the Anode Rod

In Virginia Beach, hot water heater problems may be caused from having an old anode rod that needs to be replaced. This rod is inserted into the tank and helps reduce corrosion in the tank itself. It is a good idea to consider replacing this rod when you flush your tank every few years.

To access the rod, look for a small portal on the top of your heater. Remove the access portal and unscrew the rod from the tank. Remember, the tank is under pressure. Be sure to shut off the water supply to the tank and drain it before removing the rod. You can purchase a replacement rod at your local hardware store where hot water heaters are sold.
