Pipe Concerns in Older Homes

Pipe Concerns in Older Homes

Many older homes that were constructed 25 years ago were built with galvanized or zinc coated piping in order to prevent rusting in the future. Once these pipes are corroded they will eventually rust and cause major problems in your homes plumbing system and water supply.

The most common sign of the rusting of your galvanized pipes is rust colorization developing around the front surfaces of the dishwasher and other fixtures in the kitchen, bathroom or laundry room. There are potential health risks in the rusting of your galvanized pipes . The leakage of the rust into the water supply often makes the water taste bad and become discolored. This contaminated water is not good for human consumption.

You can place a filter within the pipes to protect the water from the rust but the best protection is to replace the galvanized piping with copper piping.  Pipe replacement can be a big job but for the sake of your family and/or business it is a better route to take. It is also wise when purchasing a home to inquire about the piping in the house and recognize the issues and problems that may occur in the future with galvanized plumbing.

To have your pipes inspected and potentially replaced, call your local Hayward Roto-Rooter technician.
