Answers to Six Common Plumbing Questions

Answers to Six Common Plumbing Questions

Regular maintenance can take care of many different problems you can experience with water and drains in your house. Below are answers to six questions that are often asked a Roto-Rooter plumber in Manchester.

Why does my disposal smell?

Sometimes not everything goes down the drain. When it doesn't, the food that is left in the cage will begin to decay and smell. There are many commercial products you can buy to clean out your drain, including an environmentally safe product from Roto-Rooter. Once a month, flush the product down the disposal/drain as directed.

Why is my disposal prone to getting clogged?

When a garbage disposal gets clogged frequently, it isn't being used correctly. Proper care and usage will help prevent most clogs.

  1. Turn on the cold water for three seconds before you put anything in the disposal.
  2. Turn on the disposal.
  3. Gently put bits of food into the running disposal.
  4. Wait until you hear that the motor is through grinding food; then turn it off.
  5. Leave the water running for five to ten more seconds.

Why is my bathroom sink draining slowly?

One of the most common problems in a bathroom sink is trapped hair. There are a couple of simple things you can do to remove the hair.

  • Remove the stopper and clean the hair away from it.
  • Take apart the p-trap underneath the sink and remove any hair left there.

What can I do to prevent the drains from clogging?

Once a month pour a drain cleaner down the drain to help prevent clogs. There are many products available on the market today that use natural bacteria to break down the clogs; therefore, they are safe for the environment.

What causes black particles to come out of my taps when I turn on water?

If your water is not clear, the first thing you should do is have it tested for safety. Once you have determined that your water is safe, you can look for other causes including the following:

  • Magnesium and iron in the water
  • Old pipes
  • Resin beads from your water softener

Why do I have a puddle of water under my water heater?

There are two main causes for water that is pooling under a water heater. First, your water heater could be going out and needs to be replaced. Second, if the water in a nearby drain comes up when you flush the toilet, run the shower, or use the washer, there may be a problem with your drains. If you're uncertain, call a plumber  to help you determine the exact cause of the problem.
