Clogged sinks are an occasional nuisance in most homes. Build up usually occurs over time. Kitchen sinks clog because of grease, soap, and food. Bathroom sinks are usually clogged by hair, toothpaste, and toiletry items such as cotton balls, swabs, and facial scrub pads. To clear a minor sink clog, remove the sink strainer or drain plug. Fill the sink halfway, then place the sink plunger over the drain and give it several forceful strokes before allowing the sink a chance to drain. If plunging doesn't work, remove the 'U'-shaped P-trap over a bucket, then clean the trap by hand. Be sure to wear gloves, this can be dirty work. If the clog is beyond the P-trap, it's time to call in a professional. Be careful when using over-the-counter chemical drain openers. Many can damage your pipes. Once clean, you can keep drains flowing by treating them monthly with a safe, natural maintenance product like Roto-Rooter Pipe Shield. Finally, some plumbing problems are best left with an experienced plumber. Know your limits and be careful when you're working on plumbing fixtures. And remember, an experienced Roto-Rooter professional is only a phone call away. [Roto-Rooter jingle]
