Garbage Disposal Advice

September 20th, 2009 by Roto Rooter Bloggers

As a New York plumber (a Buffalo plumber to be exact) of Roto-Rooter, I have experienced some interesting New York plumbing issues. I would like to bring up the subject of garbage disposals, which is of much interest to me, as a plumber/drain cleaner. My advice would be to throw your garbage in a trash can. Though it is obvious, many people tend not to do so nowadays.

Firstly, your kitchen sink drain line was never designed to deal with waste. It is to be used for "gray water," nothing more (gray water is soapy water, a problem all its own). Typically a kitchen sink drain line is 1 ½ inches in diameter. If you are familiar with a bit of plumbing info, you should know only a small amount of whatever you rinse or flush down the drain can be accommodated.

Truth be told, soap and water is about it! Anything that will absorb water will expand. So, you can see how this may cause a problem or two when working with only 1 ½ inches of space. Remember... when in doubt, throw it out! You'll avoid many plumbing problems. No matter what, you may still have drain clogs. Though following this simple advice has the potential to save you money in the long run. More to come!
