Hurricanes: Preparing and protecting your home’s plumbing system before the storm

August 25th, 2011 by pabrams

Home flooding, as a result of powerful storms, can be a devastating experience. However, good preparation before the storm arrives can minimize the impact on your home. Anyone living in flood prone areas should consider relocating to a safer area until the storm has passed. We recommend that homeowners follow these important guidelines before the storm arrives.

Hurricane Irene

  • Check all downspouts and roof gutters to ensure they are securely fastened, free of debris and draining properly.
  • Make sure yard culverts and street drains are free of debris and can carry water away as fast as possible.
  • Inspect basement sump pump, if you have one. Ensure it is discharging water properly and is not clogged with debris. Do this by pouring a few buckets of water into your sump pit. In a matter of seconds, the pump should discharge the water and shut itself off.
  • Consider installing a battery back-up pump that will operate in the event of a power failure.
  • Inspect all floor drains throughout the house, including those in the garage, driveway, basement and patio. Make sure the covers are unobstructed and the drains aren’t clogged.

If there is advanced warning of a major storm, the water in your home’s plumbing system can be protected from contamination and made available for use.

  • Shut off the main water valve coming into the home. This prevents contaminated water from getting into the house.
  • Open a faucet at the highest point in the house (such as an upstairs bathroom) to allow air into the system. Then draw water as needed from the lowest faucet in the home.
  • Water in the water heater or a pressure tank represents many gallons of safe water for use in an emergency.
  • If there is enough advanced warning of the emergency, assure the freshest water supply by flushing the tank and allowing it to refill with clean water.
  • Turn off electricity or gas to the water heater, so that there is no risk that the heating unit could come on while the tank is being emptied. Draw water as needed from the drain valve at the bottom of the tank.
  • Water stored in your home’s plumbing system is safe for a few days. After a longer time, it must be disinfected before it is used for drinking or cooking.
  • Sinks and bathtubs and can be filled with water for emergency use. Water stored this way is perfect for cleaning dishes, bathing or flushing toilets. However, due to the difficulty in getting tubs and sinks clean, this water is not recommended for drinking and cooking unless it is first disinfected

Water safety after the storm

Upon returning to your home after a hurricane or flood, tap water may be unsafe to drink. Bacteria, viruses, debris, or chemicals may have gotten into the water. Water treatment plants may be damaged and unable to clean the water. Here’s what you can do:

  • If you don’t know whether the water is safe to use, boil water before using it for any purpose (example: Bathing, brushing teeth, cooking, drinking).
  • Once your community declares its water safe, be sure to flush your home’s water system by opening all faucets for several minutes.

5 Ways your Holiday Guests Could Ruin your Thanksgiving

November 16th, 2010 by pabrams

Five ways your guests (or you) could ruin your Thanksgiving holiday. (click here to view video)

1. Pouring fats or cooking oils down kitchen drains. Those turkey juices are loaded with grease that cools and solidifies inside Never pour grease or oil down the drainyour pipes, coating the walls and building up to cause kitchen sink drain clogs. Use the garbage can to dispose of grease, not the drain.

2. Putting stringy, fibrous or starchy waste down the garbage disposal. Almost every dish in a traditional Thanksgiving meal is a potential drain clogger, especially in quantity: Celery for the stuffing, potato peels, fruit peels, sweet potatoes, turkey skin, rice and pasta. And remember, this stuff finds its way into the drains during meal preparation and while rinsing or washing the dishes.

3. Not running the disposal each time waste is put inside. You should turn on the disposal each time something goes inside then let the water run long enough to push it through the drainpipe. Roto-Rooter plumbers regularly find garbage disposals completely clogged with peelings and other waste. By the time the user thinks about turning it on, it’s often too full and can’t sufficiently grind up the huge amount of waste, leaving a sink full of dirKeep peelings out of the garbage disposalty water that won’t drain.

4. Not allowing a few minutes between showers and baths can cause the drains to back up. Encourage your guests to wait at least 10 minutes between showers and baths to give slow drains a chance to drain out completely. Too many showers or baths in a short space of time could spell disaster and cause a main sewer clog and backup or septic system failure.

5. Flushing cotton balls, cotton swabs, facial scrub pads, makeup remover pads, baby wipes and tampons will cause a major toilet clog. These items do not dissolve in water and should never be flushed. They can create major clogs.

Thanksgiving is hard on your plumbing. All those extra guests can mean more showers, more laundry loads, more toilet flushes and more stuff down the garbage disposal.  You may already follow these rules but will your guests? The day after Thanksgiving is the busiest day of the year for Roto-Rooter Plumbing & Drain Service, North America’s largest provider of plumbing repair and sewer and drain services. Most of the time, the homes Roto-Rooter plumbers visit over Thanksgiving weekend already had partially clogged drains that went almost unnoticed until the guests arrived. The kitchen sink and garbage disposal get a lot of use during big meal preparation. And there are lots of extra toilet flushes, laundry loads and showers causing drains to become overwhelmed and blocked. Thanksgiving is the perfect storm for residential plumbing.

The good news is that Roto-Rooter is your 24 hour plumbing company, seven days a week, 365 days a year! Our local offices will be fully staffed to handle all calls quickly so you won’t have to wait long. And many Roto-Rooter locations do not charge extra for nights, weekends or holidays. Just call 1-800-ROTO-911 (1-800-768-6911) or click here to schedule service on-line.

Besides being able to address all your plumbing needs we are the "go to" people to handle your sewer line problems. Some of the more common problems we can remedy are:
•Broken, cracked, offset or collapsed piping, which is typically caused by shifting soil, settling, etc.
•Blockages: due to grease buildup or foreign object/s restricting water flow.
•Corrosion: causes pipe deterioration and breakage.
•Bellied pipes: when pipe sections have sunken due to ground and/or soil conditions. When this occurs a valley is created in the pipe, which causes a buildup of waste and paper that gradually build a clog.
•Joint Leaks: occur when the seals between pipes have broken.
•Tree root Infiltration: roots can prevent normal cleaning and have the potential to damage the line as they grow and break pipes over time.

Municipal Scale Plumbing & Sewer Service in Pittsburgh

June 29th, 2010 by Roto Rooter Bloggers

Area municipalities, engineering firms, commercial development, and industrial relations professionals should be aware that the Pittsburgh plumbers at Roto-Rooter Pittsburgh have unrivaled experience with excavation, pipe relining, pipe bursting and CCTV service (Closed Caption Television Video) for inspection of sewer lines of any pipe size/diameter.

A common misunderstanding is that Roto-Rooter Plumbing & Drain Services only handles minor residential sewer clogs with cable machines. While that was true for the first few decades the company was in business, Roto-Rooter branched out and began offering more advanced plumbing services in 1980 when we began installing sewers and performing all manner of plumbing work.

Roto-Rooter Pittsburgh has grown considerably and will continue to grow into a giant municipal services provider. We're acquiring new CCTV equipment, even larger excavation equipment and we are currently doing large municipal excavation jobs for Forest Hills Borough and continual CCTV work for Penn Hills Borough of Pennsylvania.

I was recently on the Forest Hills job talking to a borough representative whose exact words were, "I am so impressed with Roto-Rooter and what they have done so far. Honestly I was so skeptical about the hiring process for the bid during the qualification process. But you guys are blowing me away with the scope of work you're doing for us."

While Roto-Rooter Pittsburgh is still the Pittsburgh plumbing company of choice for drain clogs and residential plumbing and repair, our business and community leaders should not overlook us when they require expertise for advanced engineering services. Roto-Rooter is the Pittsburgh plumber to trust at home or at the office.  Call us at 412-793-9200 or visit our home page to learn more.

Wilmington Plumbers of Roto-Rooter Offer Water Conservation Tips To Trim Your Water Bill

June 7th, 2010 by Roto-Rooter Bloggers

Water conservation is very important to the Wilmington plumbers at Roto-Rooter who have implemented the ROTOGreen program to help customers trim their water usage. Below are some residential plumbing conservation tips to follow:

• Toilets are responsible for more than 40% of your total water usage. Installing a new toilet flapper and fill valve will stop most leaks. But If you want to make your old toilet as efficient as a new EPA WaterSense toilet, call us to install green plumbing parts such as a dual-flush converter that will drastically curtail your water usage without your having to sacrifice toilet performance.

• A dripping faucet can waste as much as 150 gallons of water per day, or 4,500 gallons per month. Repair the faucet and you’ll notice the savings on your water bill. Then buy a water-saving aerator and cut the flow of bathroom faucets down to a half-gallon per minute. Most faucets blast out over 2.5 GPM. That’s far more water than anyone needs for shaving, washing hands or brushing teeth.

• If you replace an old shower head with a next-generation low-flow head, it can save up to 4 gallons of water per minute without sacrificing full spray action at low or high water pressures. The Wilmington plumbers at Roto-Rooter have made the Niagara 1.5 GPM shower head their standard replacement shower head because it provides a premium look and feel and outstanding water savings.

For more water conservation tips, check out our ROTOGreen program online or call the Wilmington plumbers at Roto-Rooter at 302-235-0660.

Seattle Plumbers of Roto-Rooter offer a few ways to detect a leak in your home

May 12th, 2010 by Roto-Rooter Bloggers

A residential plumbing customer recently asked one of our Seattle plumbers for some advice regarding a possible leak. We thought it would be useful to share their experience. The plumbing customer had been receiving abnormally high water bills and was worried they had a leak lurking somewhere within their home.

The suggestion: First, put some food coloring dye into the tanks of your toilets, without flushing. If the water bowl changes color, you have leaky flappers. If nothing happens, you can move on to inspect your faucets for leaks. Lastly, if you still haven’t found anything, you can shut off every fixture and watch your meter. If the meter is spinning, you most likely have an underground leak and will need leak detection service to locate the leak.

Our Seattle plumbers are fully equipped to provide this service and would be happy to assist you. For scheduling, we can be reached at (206) 935-6600 or visit our web site to schedule service online.

Roto-Rooter prepares for the ‘cloggiest’ day of the year

November 24th, 2009 by Paul Abrams

The day after Thanksgiving is the single busiest day of the year for Roto-Rooter’s residential plumbers. Big holiday meal preparation and cleanup mean lots of grease and food go down the kitchen drain into the garbage disposal. Holiday guests require additional clothes washing, showers and toilet flushes, all of which put a strain on household plumbing.

Often, a house already has partially clogged drains that aren’t noticeable until holiday guests arrive and overwhelm the system and virtually every traditional Thanksgiving dish is an ideal clog culprit if it goes down the drain.

Incoming calls to Roto-Rooter, mostly for kitchen plumbing jobs, will jump 50% over an average Friday. The four-day Thanksgiving weekend represents a 21% increase over any other Thursday through Sunday period of the year. But we at Roto-Rooter will have enough plumbers on duty to handle the extra demand.

By following these recommendations, Thanksgiving hosts can avoid a visit from their plumber over the holiday weekend:

·         Never pour fats or cooking oils down drains. They solidify in pipes. Instead, wipe grease from pots with paper towels and throw in trash.

·         No stringy, fibrous or starchy waste in the garbage disposal (poultry skins, celery, fruit & potato peels). Disposals can’t sufficiently grind these items.

·         Make sure the disposal is running when you put food into it. Don’t wait until it’s full to turn it on.

·         Wait ten minutes between showers so slow drains have time to do their job.

·         Never flush cotton balls, swabs, hair or facial scrub pads down a toilet. They don’t dissolve and they cause clogs.

If you need a plumber, call before the holiday to avoid delays and holiday service charges. While our company-owned locations no longer charge extra for nights, weekends or holidays, this is not always the case with some independent Roto-Rooter franchises. I'm pretty sure that's why we get fewer calls on Thanksgiving Day but we get slammed the very next day. Either way, we'll be available for any emergency service as your 24 hour plumbing company.

If you need us and want to schedule service on-line, click here to be taken to our on line scheduling system.
