Halloween pumpkins may scare your garbage disposal to death!

October 21st, 2011 by pabrams

Halloween is a fun time for families, as they gather around the kitchen to carve pumpkins. But Halloween is scary too – for your sink and garbage disposal that is. Your experienced Orlando plumbers at Roto-Rooter want to remind you never put pumpkin seeds or pulp down the sink or through the garbage disposal. You would be surprised how often we hear from people who just push that pumpkin muck down the sink drain and turn on the disposal! When pumpkin guts dry, the harden like concrete and can creat all sorts of havoc in your drains.

Roto-Rooter’s Orlando plumbing experts suggest instead that you spread out a newspaper and put the gooey guts and seeds on it, then separate the seeds. The newspaper and pulp are great for the compost heap and those seeds are best for making a tasty seasonal snack. You don’t even need to rinse off the good, a lot of people believe it adds to the flavor. And remember, Roto-Rooter is a 24 hour plumbing company so if you don’t get this information in time and your drain is plugged with pumpkin guts, we’ll send a plumber out to any Greater Orlando location straight away! You can give us a call any time of day at 407-886-7311.

Plumbers have used a variety of materials to make water pipes

October 14th, 2011 by pabrams

I posted a variation of this blog post a few years ago and thought it would be good to revisit this topic again. It seems a few of our plumbers here in Orlando have run across some of these materials lately and have been answering questions about them from customers.

Plumbing contractors have used all sorts of materials to make reliable water supply lines over the centuries. One of the most notorious was lead. It was the mostRoman lead piping common type of water pipe for a very long time because it is a soft, pliable metal and easy to work with. The word “plumbing” actually is derived from the Latin word for lead, “plumbum.” A longtime plumber in Orlando told me that lead pipes aren’t as common here but if you visit older cities in the Northeastern U.S. you’ll still find plenty of old lead pipes. I don’t have to tell you the dangers of lead in water. If you have lead pipes, you should seriously consider changing to safer materials, and at the very least, always run the water tap for two or three minutes after it feels cold before drinking such water or cooking with it. That way you won’t be getting water that has been sitting in lead for an extended period and picking up high concentrations that can effect the brain and body.

Galvanized steel pipes have also fallen out of favor in new construction. After years of use, minerals from water react with the galvanizing material (including lead) to cause scale build up inside the pipe. The scale will eventually narrow the diameter of the pipe like the body’s arteries do from years on a high-fat diet. Scale buildup eventually results in lower water pressure and reduced volume. Companies that offer plumbing services hate the stuff but are happy to replace it with a better material.

Copper water supply pipingCopper is ideal for 1/2 inch and 1 inch water supply lines leading from the main water supply pipe to kitchen plumbing, sinks and toilets. Copper is popular with plumbing contractors because it is clean, doesn’t rust or corrode and is very reliable. Copper will freeze and burst if left exposed to the elements but this is only a problem if the pipes run through the outer walls of your home. Always be sure those pipes are well insulated. Unfortunately, copper has gotten expensive and it has become popular with thieves who will steal it from homes and sell it to a recycling facility for cash.

In addition, PVC is making a comeback as a water supply pipe material and the newer flexible PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) material, long relied upon in Europe is becoming more and more accepted as a reliable, low cost alternative for residential plumbing. You’ll find Orlando plumbing companies who work with all of these materials. At Roto-Rooter, we still prefer copper but its rising cost is making the new PEX and PVC materials more attractive each day. If you have questions or concerns about any of the pipe materials in your home, call Roto-Rooter of Orlando and we’ll be happy to take a look and give you advice you can rely on. 407-886-7311.

Ask a Stupid Question Day Doesn’t apply to plumbing – there are no stupid questions

September 28th, 2011 by pabrams

Who knew there was such a thing as a National Ask a Stupid Question Day? Well there is and it is today, September 28th. Any of our Atlanta plumbers on staff will tell you that plumbing can get technical. In fact, we’ve come to realize that most non-plumbers don’t know a ballcock from a flapper valve so they sometimes feel a bit intimidated asking questions about water heaters, garbage disposals and even the parts in their toilet tank. That’s why we at Roto-Rooter like to say “there are no stupid plumbing questions.” For that reason, Roto-Rooter has a pretty nifty Frequently Asked Questions page on its website where visitors can search see if someone else has already asked the question and gotten an answer from one of our plumbers.

Home and business owners might want to consider bookmarking the FAQ page for future reference. We think it will prove to be a much appreciated resource. And for those times when you can’t find the answer you’re looking for, Roto-Rooter has a free Ask the Plumber feature on the website too. Just key in your question and you’ll get a detailed answer within a day or two from one of our licensed plumbing specialists. How’s that for simple? There are a lot of plumbing companies in Atlanta and across the country, but not many hand out free advice or answers to plumbing problems.

Roto-Rooter prepares for the ‘cloggiest’ day of the year

November 24th, 2009 by Paul Abrams

The day after Thanksgiving is the single busiest day of the year for Roto-Rooter’s residential plumbers. Big holiday meal preparation and cleanup mean lots of grease and food go down the kitchen drain into the garbage disposal. Holiday guests require additional clothes washing, showers and toilet flushes, all of which put a strain on household plumbing.

Often, a house already has partially clogged drains that aren’t noticeable until holiday guests arrive and overwhelm the system and virtually every traditional Thanksgiving dish is an ideal clog culprit if it goes down the drain.

Incoming calls to Roto-Rooter, mostly for kitchen plumbing jobs, will jump 50% over an average Friday. The four-day Thanksgiving weekend represents a 21% increase over any other Thursday through Sunday period of the year. But we at Roto-Rooter will have enough plumbers on duty to handle the extra demand.

By following these recommendations, Thanksgiving hosts can avoid a visit from their plumber over the holiday weekend:

·         Never pour fats or cooking oils down drains. They solidify in pipes. Instead, wipe grease from pots with paper towels and throw in trash.

·         No stringy, fibrous or starchy waste in the garbage disposal (poultry skins, celery, fruit & potato peels). Disposals can’t sufficiently grind these items.

·         Make sure the disposal is running when you put food into it. Don’t wait until it’s full to turn it on.

·         Wait ten minutes between showers so slow drains have time to do their job.

·         Never flush cotton balls, swabs, hair or facial scrub pads down a toilet. They don’t dissolve and they cause clogs.

If you need a plumber, call before the holiday to avoid delays and holiday service charges. While our company-owned locations no longer charge extra for nights, weekends or holidays, this is not always the case with some independent Roto-Rooter franchises. I'm pretty sure that's why we get fewer calls on Thanksgiving Day but we get slammed the very next day. Either way, we'll be available for any emergency service as your 24 hour plumbing company.

If you need us and want to schedule service on-line, click here to be taken to our on line scheduling system.

Thanks Roto-Rooter

November 13th, 2009 by Roto Rooter Bloggers
Jamel Robinson responded to our Saturday afternoon call for a plumbing problem at our home in Manassas, after we were unable to get other plumbing companies to respond to our calls until the following Monday. We had sewage backed up into our house, which had begun to overflow into the bathroom and needed an immediate response.

Jamel assessed the situation gave us an estimate and went to work right away. While he was running the snake through the sewage line , we heard a very loud pop that broke his cable. While the line was clear and water was flowing through the pipe he called Craig Webb to come out and check the line with a camera. Craig showed up shortly after and ran the camera through the line. He found  that roots were growing into the line. He and Jamel explained the situation to my wife and I and prepared an estimate to repair the sewer line.

We were so impressed with the outstanding service we received and the absolute professionalism of Jamel and Craig and used them to complete the additional job. By Tuesday, the area was excavated and the pipe was repaired. I was impressed with the professionalism of the entire Roto-Rooter Plumbing crew.

You can be assured that the next time we need a Manassas, Virginia plumber, Roto-Rooter will be our first call. We will also highly recommend the Virginia plumbers of Roto-Rooter for their outstanding plumbing services to our friends and neighbors.

Check out our Web site for more information or call (703) 257-1025.
