Plumbers' Advice on How to Troubleshoot a Leaky Toilet

If you have a leaky toilet you are spending more money each month on your water bill than is necessary. The following are reasons way a toilet may leak and basic solutions for common toilet problems. Remember, though, that toilets have many fragile parts. It may cost less in the long run to have it repaired by a professional, such as Roto-Rooter, rather than break something that requires an emergency fix.

Causes of Leaky Toilet

Because they are constantly in use, toilets age and can begin to leak. Most of the time a plumber will find a leak due to one of the following situations:

  • An old flapper that is not seating properly
  • Mineral buildup on the flapper
  • Mineral buildup on the float and float valve
  • A flapper chain that catches and keeps the flapper suspended
  • A blocked fill tube
  • Broken parts

Basic Solutions for Commons Problems

There are a few basic solutions to the problems listed above. If the following repairs don't work, call a plumbing company to come and troubleshoot your situation further.

  • Mineral buildup--Gently wipe off the float, valves, and flapper.
  • Bad flapper--Replace the flapper, the valve, or both.
  • Catching chain--Thread the chain through a plastic straw to keep it straight or replace the chain.
  • Incorrect water level--Adjust the float either up or down.
