Garbage Disposal

Although they're absolutely vital in the modern kitchen, garbage disposals can very quickly become nuisances if they aren't properly maintained. The best way to prolong the lives of these appliances is to treat them right, so what can you do to keep your disposal fresh and clean?

Citrus peels help with the smell

One of the biggest problems people have with their disposal is the smell. The very nature of this device means you'll constantly be putting old or rotten food down it, which can eventually lead to an overpowering odor. Thankfully, there's a pretty easy solution to this. Simply toss the peel of a citrus fruit down the disposal every now and again. The sweet and sour smell of something like a lemon can easily mask most kitchen odors.

Be mindful of what you put down the disposal

A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that their garbage disposal can handle everything they throw at it. While these handy machines can withstand a lot, they have their limits. Harding also advises that you avoid putting large bones down the disposal, as they can work to chip away at the blades or even get stuck in the pipe.

You should also do your best to keep grease and "expandable foods" like pasta out of the disposal. Both of these tend to stick to the blades or drain pipe, which can result in a major clog.

Baking soda and vinegar are your friends

If you do happen to run into a clog, there are some natural solutions you can turn to before going to the heavy-duty cleaners. Vinegar and baking soda can be used to tackle minor plugs in your drains. All you have to do is put a half cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a cup of white vinegar. When you've done this, simply put the stopper over the hole and let the chemical reaction do all the hard work.

While this is happening, put a tea kettle on to boil. When the pot starts whistling, take the stopper out and pour the boiling hot water into the sink, washing away the baking soda and vinegar mixture, along with any leftover waste that's been sitting in your drain.
