Expert Plumber: Tips on What to Check When Buying a Home

Are you buying a new home?  Have you checked all the plumbing fixtures and appliances to make sure they are in good condition? Even though you may receive a warranty on all the appliances and fixtures, if they break down, you will still be inconvenienced and may even have to incur part of the cost to get them repaired or replaced. It is best to have an experienced plumber

from Roto-Rooter check them out. It will give you peace of mind in the future.

When I buy a used home, what should I have checked?

Purchasing a home that has already been established is a great idea. You will not have to landscape the yard, chances are there is already a fence around the property, your basement is most likely already finished, and all the small problems that may crop up in a brand new home have already been resolved. However, it is very important that you not take the previous owner’s word for the condition of the appliances and fixtures.  The fact is the seller may not know the overall condition of the complete plumbing system so it is your responsibility to have it checked for quality and condition.

You should have a professional check all the plumbing fixtures which include the air conditioner, sump system, all faucets, pipes, tubs, toilets, and showers. Check the condition of the water heater, the outside hose bibs, and the landscape sprinkler system. He should enter the attic and make sure there is adequate insulation and that there is no wiring or piping issues that would not meet standard building codes.

He should check the foundation to make sure that there are no conditions that would make the house unstable. A thorough examination of all areas should be made to detect mold and mildew. Have there been any floods or damage caused by roof leaks? How many years are left on the current roof? A check underneath the home in the crawl space should be made if there is no basement. Sometimes, sewer and drain pipes are installed by an amateur plumber that do not meet standard

building codes or that compromise the integrity of the overall structure.

Your Roto-Rooter technician can make corrections and repairs in those problem areas that need to be addressed. With experience and professionalism, you will know that the job has been done right.
