Craft Idea from Honolulu Roto-Rooter: Use PVC Pipes to Make Organizers

Both do-it-yourself plumbers and Roto-Rooter plumbers have used PVC pipe for many years for both indoor and outdoor plumbing systems. Lately PVC pipes have been rediscovered as a great way to create organizing bins. When you use PVC to build your own organizers you can design them to meet your specific needs. Here are guidelines for building organizers and examples of two different organizers you can make.

Guidelines for High-Quality Organizers

Here are guidelines for building organizers and examples of two different organizers that our Honolulu Roto-Rooter has made:

  • Take a few minutes to plan your project before you begin. Sketch out your design, including the dimensions. This information will help you buy the right parts.
  • Decide if you want the option to expand you organizers. Buy open-ended parts if you do.
  • Think about what you want to store in your bins. Use larger pipes if you will be storing heavy objects. Save money and use smaller pipes for lighter objects.
  • Buy contractor's packages for the connectors. Even if you end up with too many connectors it could still be less expensive.
  • Use pipe glue for permanent, stronger organizers. Don't use the glue if you want to take them apart to rebuild them to meet varying needs.

Storage Shelves for Totes or Bins

The advantage of building your own shelves with PVC Pipe is that you can custom design the shelves to hold various sizes of bins. Use the following steps to build the shelves:

  • Measure the height and depth of the storage boxes you wish to put on the shelves.
  • Cut the pipes to accommodate the boxes' measurements.
  • Build two frames that are identical. One will be in the back and the other for the front.
  • Use connectors to attach pre-cut pipes to the front and back frames. Build several cubes to make it sturdy.

You can either put planks across the shelves or leave them open and slide the totes onto the front and back pieces.

Circle Organizing Bins

Circle organizers can be made any size you like. Moreover, you can combine pipes of different sizes. Select the size of pipe you wish to use, and then cut it into pieces the length you desire. Glue the pieces together. The organizers can be a variety of shapes, such as rectangular or octagonal. If you want to set the organizer on the floor against a wall, make sure to build a firm base. If you are going to mount it on the wall the shape of the base doesn't matter. Circle bins are great for storing various items, such as the following:

  • Electronic gadgets
  • Cords
  • Garden tools
  • Toys
  • Paint brushes
  • PVC pipe connectors, and other plumbing parts
  • Shoes
  • Wine bottles
  • And more
