Annual Home Plumbing Maintenance

What’s worse than suddenly realizing you need a plunger… and you’re stuck in the bathroom without one? When it comes to plumbing, planning for future issues is of paramount importance. Many people forget that home plumbing requires periodic maintenance, until a damaging or costly problem arises.

Don’t be caught unawares. You can easily avoid many plumbing issues by performing a few routine self-inspections of your plumbing and fixtures at least twice per year.

Outdoor Plumbing Inspection:

  • It is important clear out any debris, leaves or sludge from the gutters, because clogged or leaking gutters can cause major problems with the roof and foundation.
  • Check all outdoor faucets, nozzles and hoses for leaks or damage. It is also important to be aware of where your main water line is in your house or yard in case a pipe breaks or something needs fixed in the future, you will know where it is to turn off the water to the house.

Indoor Plumbing Inspection:

  • Check for leakage in pipes under and around sink and toilet fixtures. Also make sure that the toilet is running properly (not filling too much or running too long).
  • Make sure that the connections with the dishwasher and laundry machines are still secure, not leaking or corroded. Double- check for moisture build-up in these areas too, to avoid mildew in the future.

Preventative maintenance is just as important for your plumbing as it is for your car. Identifying potential problems or small leaks before they worsen will save you time and money in the long run.
