A Faucet Repair Can Be Fun!

A Faucet Repair Can Be Fun!

Do you like working with your hands? When you finish a project, do you step back and feel delighted with your accomplishment and a job well-done? You probably feel that way after you fix your dripping faucet! No longer will you be kept awake at night because of that pesky “drip, drip, drip” which never ceases.

Of course, not everyone takes delight in tackling plumbing problems like faucet drips. Many prefer to contact Roto-Rooter and defer those delightful tasks to professionals with years of experience fixing faucets, unclogging drains, and installing water heaters.

Faucet repairs are fairly simple. The valve stems of these fixtures can be packed with new seals and o-rings. If you decide to tackle this project, here are a few tips that will be helpful:

  • You will need are a screwdriver and a pair of adjustable pliers.
  • Turn the water supply to the faucet off.
  • Remove the handle from the faucet housing and unscrew the valve stem assembly from the housing using the adjustable pliers.
  • Using a screwdriver, remove the set screw that holds the rubber seal stopper in place. This seal is found at the base of the valve stem. Replace this seal with the correct sized replacement.
  • Examine the seal seat located in the recessed area that houses the valve stem. If there is any damage to the seat, you can purchase a tool made to grind the seat and even-out any spots that may prevent a good seal.
  • Replace the valve stem and handle. Turn the water on and test the faucet.

Your faucet should now work with no drips when the water is turned off. However, with your worn faucet housing, it may be necessary to purchase a new fixture if there are still problems.
